(The Guardian) California's Katie Porter announces Senate campaignDemocratic congresswoman Katie Porter has announced she will run to represent California in the Senate – though there isn’t yet a vacant seat. Porter appears to be getting a jump on the expected retirement of Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein, who has served since 1992 and is up for reelection in the reliably blue state next year. Several Democrats are thought to have interest in succeeding her, but Porter is the first to announce a formal run: Porter, a progressive, has become known for using a whiteboard to devastating effect against witnesses in committee hearings, and for her testy exchange with a gun rights advocate in a hearing held after the Uvalde school shooting this past summer.

(The Guardian) California senator Dianne Feinstein is unfazed by Katie Porter’s announcement that she’d run for her Senate seat in 2024. The 89-year-old is the oldest sitting senator, and has in recent months been the subject of reports questioning her fitness to serve. Feinstein was blase when the San Francisco Chronicle asked for her thoughts on the challenge from the 49-year-old Porter:

(The Guardian) Virginia Senator Tim Kaine has announced he will run for another term in 2024, meaning Democrats won’t have to find a new candidate to fill his seat in what is expected to be a very difficult year for the party: Virginia has supported Democrats in recent presidential and Senate elections, but Kaine’s retirement would have created another headache for a party that will have several as they try to maintain control of the Senate in 2024. Several Democratic lawmakers from red states will be up for re-election then, including West Virginia’s Joe Manchin, Montana’s Jon Tester and Ohio’s Sherrod Brown, and Republicans only need to win two seats to regain control of the Senate.

(The Guardian) Democrat Ruben Gallego announces run for Kyrsten Sinema's senate seat After spending months alienating her ostensible allies in the Biden administration and Democratic party at large, senator Kyrsten Sinema last year announced she would leave the party and continue representing Arizona as an independent. Sinema said she would continue to work with her former allies in the Senate, but her decision nonetheless infuriated Democrats, and today a popular congressman announced he would run against her in the 2024 election. The Guardian’s Joan E Greve has the latest: The Democratic congressman Ruben Gallego of Arizona announced on Monday that he will run for the Senate, teeing up a potential battle against incumbent Senator Kyrsten Sinema next year. Gallego, a marine combat veteran who has served in the House of Representatives since 2015, made the widely expected announcement in a campaign video that was filmed in his Phoenix area congressional district. In the video, Gallego explains his unlikely journey to the House as the son of an immigrant mother who struggled to make ends meet. If elected, Gallego, who is of Mexican and Colombian descent, would be the first Latino to represent Arizona in the Senate. “Growing up poor, the only thing I really had was the American dream,” Gallego says. “I’m running to be the senator of Arizona because you deserve somebody fighting for you and fighting with you every day to make sure you have the same chance at el sueño americano.” The announcement comes after months of speculation. Whispers of Gallego’s plans grew louder last month, when Sinema announced she would switch her party affiliation from Democratic to independent, although she continues to caucus with Senate Democrats. “At a time when our nation needs leadership most, Arizona deserves a voice that won’t back down in the face of struggle,” Gallego said at the time. “Unfortunately Senator Sinema is once again putting her own interests ahead of getting things done for Arizonans.”

(The Guardian) Republicans are gleeful over Ruben Gallego’s entrance into Arizona’s Senate race, because it raises the possibility of a three-way split between voters that could benefit the GOP. “The Democrat civil war is on in Arizona. Chuck Schumer has a choice: stand with open borders radical Ruben Gallego or back his incumbent, Senator Kyrsten Sinema,” Philip Letsou, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said in a statement. If Democrats and independents split their ballots between Sinema and Gallego, it could allow a GOP candidate to retake Arizona’s Senate seat in 2024 – a year where Democratic senators from several red states will also be seeking re-election.
In an a video that stretches for more than three minutes, Democratic House representative Ruben Gallego alternates between English and Spanish in describing his upbringing in Arizona, decision to serve in the Marines and his reasoning for challenging Kyrsten Sinema. The ad is short on personal attacks against Sinema or the Republicans and more focused on telling Gallego’s story. Here it is below:

(Townhall) After nearly beating New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in November, former Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin is plotting his next move. Earlier this month, Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced her re-election campaign for 2024. "Ending months of speculation about her future, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a liberal Democrat from upstate New York, announced in recent days that she would seek a third full term next year," the New York Times reported. "On Thursday, Ms. Gillibrand said she was confident she would win despite Republicans’ strong performance in the state in November. She also dismissed rumors that had swirled among New York Democrats in recent months that she might give up the seat." But it appears Zeldin could challenge Gillibrand for the seat, especially fresh off of Republican victories in the Empire State. When asked about the potential challenge, Gillibrand insisted she will beat Zeldin. He disagrees. Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer narrowly avoided a primary challenge from Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez last year.

(The Guardian) California's Feinstein won't seek re-electionDianne Feinstein, California’s Democratic senator who is the longest serving female lawmaker in the chamber’s history, has announced she will not seek re-election in 2024: Feinstein’s decision had been widely expected, and several Democrats kicked off campaigns to succeed her even before the senator’s announcement. These include Katie Porter and Adam Schiff, both progressive House lawmakers. Barbara Lee is reportedly also planning to toss her hat in the ring for the seat representing the Democratic bastion. At 89, Feinstein is the oldest sitting in Congress, and was first elected in 1992.
