(Daily Kos Elections) NJ-Sen (D): The first polls closed tonight over 45 minutes ago, but we still only have a trickle of results. The first interesting numbers come in New Jersey’s Democratic primary for Senate. There, with 15% reporting, Sen. Bob Menendez is up just 57-43 against activist Lisa McCormick, who doesn’t even appear to have filed a single fundraising report with the FEC. That’s quite the protest vote against Menendez, who was tried for corruption last year in a case that ended in a hung jury.

(Daily Kos) NJ-02: Singh is not running away with this, Grossman and Fiocchi are virtually tied and less than 10% behind.
(Daily Kos) Almost all of Essex, Hudson and Union counties out. So I think it will end up in the 63-37 Menendez range.

(Daily Kos Elections) There’s also a special election taking place tonight in a GOP-held state Senate seat in Missouri. Even though it’s a red district, Democrat Lauren Arthur is currently crushing Republican Kevin Corlew 62-37 with 25% reporting. This would be a big pickup for Dems.

(Daily Kos) Menendez had no business running for reelection. The NJ Republican Party is a disaster thanks to Chris Christie, but it’s really a shame that the party didn’t encourage him to retire so that a rising star in the party could have a shot.

(Daily Kos Elections) Polls have now closed in New Mexico and the eastern part of South Dakota. As you can see, though, returns are slow in coming tonight—so far.

(Daily Kos Elections) NJ-02: Conservative Democrat Jeff Van Drew has a comfortable 57-21 lead on his nearest opponent, Tanzie Youngblood, but the GOP battle is a much tighter affair. Seth Grossman has a 37-33 lead on Hirsh Singh with 41% reporting, a race that NRCC chair Steve Stivers described as a Republican “recruiting hole” after the filing deadline closed.
(Daily Kos Elections) NM-02: This is a conservative seat in southern New Mexico, but it’s open, and Dems are hoping to make inroads here this year. EMILY’s List-backed attorney Xochitl Torres Small is absolutely crushing her primary opponent, Mad Hildebrandt, 82-18 with 11% reporting. On the GOP side, state Rep. Yvette Herrell, one of the most conservative legislators in the state, has a 47-29 lead over former state party chair Monty Newman.

(Daily Kos Elections) NJ-05 (R): The GOP primary to take on freshman Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer is tight in the early going. With 14% reporting, frequent candidate Steve Lonegan (whom Trump publicly branded a “loser”) is up just 51-49 on John McCann.

(Daily Kos) Here is the usual CA caveat: many people — it might be a majority now — vote by mail. Unlike some states, ballots need only be postmarked by today. Their counting can go on for days if not up to two weeks. Each one has to be validated (signature verification) before being opened and counted. So no good reason to stay up late. If early returns (the initial mail in votes start getting reported in a couple hours) indicate clear leaders, that likely holds. Otherwise no conclusion tonight. This was sort of a big deal in 2016 — Trump had won the EC by late Tuesday. But CA vote counting was just starting, and it was not initially apparent that he’d lose the PV or by how much for days, and nearly 3 weeks before we knew it was 2.8 million.

(Daily Kos Elections) AL-02 (R): GOP Rep. Martha Roby pissed off a lot of Trump supporters by speaking ill of their beloved after the Access Hollywood tape burst loose in 2016, and she has just a 38-30 lead on ex-Rep. Bobby Bright with 14% reporting. Bright is a former Democrat who served a single term in Congress. Now he’s gone full-on Trumpist.
