(Five Thirty-Eight) Guys, wanna hear something incredible? Gavin Newsom has been running for governor of California since 2015. He’s raised $36 million dollars and he’s probably going to come in first place tonight, unless something goes terribly, terribly wrong for him. But who’s coming in second? Former mayor of LA and fellow Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa (who announced his bid in 2016 and who’s raised $34 million)? Or John Cox, a Republican in a state that’s probably not going to elect a Republican governor? Cox, for comparison, has only raised $6 million. The Republican Party in California is struggling, but if Cox gets on that ballot it could help the party come November — and it’s also a reminder that even within a state as blue as blue can be, there are still lots of voters with more middle-of-the-road views. I’ve got a little bit more on California’s electorate in this story (linked below). -Read more: fivethirtyeight.com/features/california-has-left-dianne-feinsteins-moderation-behind-but-not-dianne-feinstein/

(Five Thirty-Eight) For California parties to successfully cull their fields of candidates late in the game, they must hope voters don’t support candidates who have withdrawn but whose names still appear on the ballot. Yet over in the Iowa gubernatorial race, Nate Boulton is still pulling 6 percent of the vote despite having withdrawn two weeks ago.

(Daily Kos) IA-4 is a stretch but IA-1 and 3 are very winnable and the tariffs are turning the Repubs very unpopular there as farmers are getting hammered
(Daily Kos) Early, but Dems are outvoting Repubs in Iowa-4, the most Republican district in the state and currently represented by lunatic bigot Steve King.

(Five Thirty-Eight) GOP Rep. Steve Pearce’s run for governor left an open seat in New Mexico’s 2nd District, giving for Democrats an opportunity in a district that Trump carried by 10 points. Democrat Xochitl Torres-Small argues that neither party truly represents the interests of rural voters, and she’s a 33-year-old woman who knows how to kill and butcher an oryx. Keep an eye on her.

(Daily Kos Elections) MT-Sen (R): With 15 percent reporting, former district judge and state legislator Russell Fagg has a very narrow lead over state auditor Matt Rosedale (33-31). Al Olszewski and Troy Downing are well behind, scoring in the high teens. The winner faces two-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in November.

(Daily Kos) A Republican with a close association to Roy Moore just beat the incumbent Republican Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. This could give Bob Vance, Roy Moore’s 2012 opponent, who only lost 52-48 despite being essentially dropped in at the last moment, an opportunity.

(Five Thirty-Eight) Democrats are itching for a rematch with Montana Rep. Greg Gianforte, who infamously assaulted a reporter on election eve during last year’s special election. In a surprise, state Rep. Kathleen Williams is leading the Democratic primary to take him on; she has 34 percent to John Heenan’s 33 percent and Grant Kier’s 24 percent. That could be because women are doing extremely well in Democratic primaries this year … or it could just be a function of her home county of Gallatin being one of the first areas to report.

(Daily Kos Elections) AL-Gov (R): Gov. Kay Ivey, who was elevated to her post last year after Gov. Robert Bentley resigned in disgrace (remember that whole scandal?), has won the GOP nomination without a runoff, says the AP. She has a 56-26 lead over Tommy Battle with 72% reporting. Her Democratic opponent is looking like Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, but there’s been no call in that race yet.

(Daily Kos Elections) AL-Gov (D): There it is: The AP has called the Democratic primary for Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, who will take on GOP Gov. Kay Ivey in November. Ivey is the heavy favorite, but of course, the Alabama GOP just managed to lose a statewide race only six months ago….
