(Five Thirty-Eight) All of a sudden, 65 percent of precincts are reporting in South Dakota. Rep. Kristi Noem leads Attorney General Marty Jackley 58 percent to 42 percent for the GOP nod for governor, and Dusty Johnson is fending off two conservative challengers for Noem’s U.S. House seat.

(Five Thirty-Eight) The night so far: Again, it’s not a great night for GOP incumbents, with Rep. Martha Roby in Alabama being forced into a runoff against the congressman she ousted in 2010 (a former Democrat who’s now a Republican). On the Democratic side, women are having a good night so far. We’ll see if that changes in California. In New Jersey, we’ve seen that Democrats don’t love that their senator has been on trial for bribery, but I don’t see how that changes anything going into November. If things get too close for comfort for Menendez, New Jersey Democrats will convince him to leave the race and replace him with a Democrat who can win — see Sen. Robert Torricelli in 2002.

(Five Thirty-Eight) One way the parties work to overcome the challenges of the top-two system in California is to issue endorsements at their conventions. However, the CA Democratic Party requires 60 percent of the vote at the convention to issue an endorsement. In a crowded field, it can be hard to reach that level. Dianne Feinstein didn’t get her party’s endorsement. Nor did any candidate in 10th, 39th or 49th congressional districts.

(Daily Kos) Kristi Noem is absolutely crushing Marty Jackley in SD-AL with 68% reporting. Looks like she’ll break the curse of Republican congressmen losing badly in statewide primaries.
(Daily Kos) The tarriff wars that Trump started is going to hurt a lot of farmers. Mexico just announced 20% tarriffs on pork and that is the second largest market for US pork producers and in Iowa. They voted for Trump so we will see if affecting their pocketbooks/bottom line will have an effect.
